Murphy Middle School students stole the show with their one act play “These Shining Lives”, written by Melanie Marnich.
Under the direction of theater teacher Candace Norris, the group presented the play, which is based on a true story. The group received first place for their efforts.
Additionally, the group had five students who were recognized with awards for their successful performance. Evie Atwell won All Star Cast; Abby Atterbury won All Star Cast; Jillian Herrera won Honorable Mention Cast; Katie Creevy won Honorable Mention Cast and Hadeel Ali won All Star Technical Crew.
The students competed against Robinson Middle School, Carpenter Middle School(2nd place), Renner Middle School (3rd place), Otto Middle School, and Wilson Middle School.
“These Shining Lives” tells the story of four women who worked in a watch factory in Ottawa, Ill. The play dramatizes the danger women faced in the workforce in the 1920s, and the lack of concern by companies for protecting the health of its employees.
