Murphy Middle School students collected over 55 gift cards collected totaling $2,200 for the victims of the Dec. 26 tornadoes.
Target, Walmart and Subway gift cards were turned in at Murphy Middle School and given to Pearson Elementary School in Rowlett in hopes of easing some of the struggles Garland ISD families have faced since the travesty.
“When the Rowlett area was hit with a tornado that was so close to our homes, we knew we needed to do something to help,” said Murphy Middle School PTA President Angela Hughes.
A social media post by a Pearson teacher caught the attention of the Murphy Middle School VP of Programs, Susan Rice. The post stated that while their school did not sustain heavy damages, the neighborhoods around it did. Close to 100 student’s homes were significantly damaged or total losses and many families lost everything.
