Desmond Bowden strikes something of a Heisman Trophy pose as he attempts to elude Denton Ryan’s Toby Burch during last Friday’s bi-district game in Denton. The Panthers lost 56-33, and ended the season 7-4 overall. (

DENTON — Plano East has taken tremendous strides under head coach Joey McCullough.
Just a year ago, during McCullough’s first year at the helm, the Panthers, who were still reeling from yet another coaching change — three in three years — went 1-9; they missed the playoffs yet again.
In 2015, a much more steady and mature crew took the field under McCullough’s guidance, and they didn’t disappoint the PESH graduate. This time around, East produced a 7-3 record and made the postseason.
Unfortunately, their postseason trip was short-lived, as East fell 56-33 last Friday to Denton Ryan in a Class 6A, Region I bi-district game at C.H. Collins Stadium.
The Raiders will move on to play South Grand Prairie, a surprise victor over Euless Trinity, in an area-round contest this weekend.
