Senior Center pays tribute to veterans

This has been the busiest week of the month. We always start off with our morning exercise groups. Then we look forward to our bounty of baked products compliments of Kroger. These products are free for the taking every morning except Friday.

Monday Winters Park was here with lunch and the new chef, Jeff Brown, came along to get acquainted with our group.   We enjoyed meeting him and we look forward to seeing him again and dine on his delicious lunches.

Tuesday morning had the balance class going and Ann’s craft class worked on the cancer items. We were treated to a delicious sponsored lunch. The computer class met in the afternoon.

Wednesday was the big day of the month with our potluck luncheon celebrating America’s birthday this month. We paid tribute to our veterans in attendance. Two women stood out in the group: Nell Hoff was an officer in the Marine Corp and ‘Ding’ Garcia was an Army nurse, both during WWII. These two ladies are well into their 90s and it was wonderful to have them in attendance. There were 11 other veterans, serving in the Korean and Vietnam Wars. We thank each of them for their service to our country.

I write a short story about our veterans each month in my newsletter. If you would like to be featured in our newsletter, please call me or bring your story by the office. We owe our veterans so much for our freedoms.

Thursday the balance class got us started. The class is getting bigger each week. Vince Doyle is teaching the class this summer and the class is free, so come join us.

We played the ‘Remember When’ game on Wednesday. We remembered 1985 and it was harder that we thought it would be, but there is always a victor!

Friday the book club met with author Fred Holmes, who was here to discuss his new book “Return to Sender.” This is a time travel story. He is working on a sequel at the moment. Fred is one of our members and plays bridge with us often. He has recently had surgery and we wish him the very best.

Now for next week: Monday we start with chair exercises followed with our Smart Driving Class sponsored by the AARP 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. If you haven’t registered, please come about 15 minutes early to get registered and paid. This class is small so it may be the one to take advantage of.

National Senior Service will sponsor lunch on this day. It is game day, so all the games will be out and the crowd will be noisy.

Tuesday we will do our balance class, play games and have lunch. In the afternoon we will tour the Laguna Madre Traders, a new business in Sachse. The computer class will meet in the afternoon.

Wednesday we will exercise, play games and be treated to lunch.

Thursday we will play games and eat lunch and then travel to Winters Park to attend a fashion show, refreshments and prizes. This will be a fun afternoon.

Friday we will exercise and play games. This is the day we relax. The county nurses will not be here until October. They are busy getting the kids ready for school.

Remember to live your life and forget your age. Until next time, I’ll keep the door open.
