Studies show that reading daily during summer break is the most important activity to prevent learning loss, especially for younger students.

This month the National PTA, in cooperation with Kindle, are sharing tips and activities to encourage ongoing reading through the PTA Family Reading Challenge. The challenge is a campaign to inspire families to keep learning alive by reading great books together.

Wylie ISD PTA Council President Heidi PeCoy encourages families to take part in the challenge.

Families can participate in the PTA Family Reading Challenge by sharing photos, videos and memories that demonstrate how and why reading together is a fun and treasured family activity.

The program is open to anyone and reading goals are established by the participant.

PeCoy said reading to your children increases their listening skills and imagination.

“Children who are introduced to reading at an early age are far more likely to enjoy learning in school,” she said. “Reading to my child when she was young was the foundation to her excelling in school, her love for reading and her desire to learn. It was the foundation for her reading, as she is the one who works diligently to excel in her studies.”

Participants will receive challenge updates, get ideas for reading with family and may qualify for prizes.
