Legion Day at TX Boys State

American Legion Hale-Combest Post 315 Wylie, Texas, members Frank Dirnbauer, Don Lange and Mary Lange attended Legion Day at Texas Boys State held on the University of Texas Austin Campus in June.

The legionnaires went to meet with the young men who participated in 2015 Texas Boys State. The following young men attended the 2015 Texas Boys State. Blaine Morton representing Community High School. Carson Buckner, Jolen Martinez, Jacob Mayfield and Steven Sereno represented Lovejoy High School. Randy Points represented Wylie East High School. Ryland Etten, Samuel Pybus, Carter Spillyards and Timothy VanSanders represented Wylie High School. And Robert Killian represented Wylie Preparatory Academy.

The young men learned how to organize city, county and state government. Using the election procedure the young men choose city, county and state officers. They learned about the responsibilities they will assume when they become adults.

Frank Dirnbauer arranged for a tour of Senator Van Taylor’s Office. Daniel J. McGinty, Senator Van Taylor’s aide, escorted the group around the State Capitol.Family, friends and Legionnaires attended the flag lowering ceremony at the University of Texas Mall.

That night, Boys State Citizens, family and Legionnaires gathered at the LBJ Auditorium. The main speaker for the evening was Vietnam Medal of Honor recipient Colonel Bruce Crandall (retired). American Legion Hale-Combest Post 315 sent five young men to Texas Boys State in 2013. Post 315 sent six young men in 2014. In 2015, Post 315 was able to send eleven young men. Their ability to send the students over the last three years to Texas Boys State is due to the generosity of the local businesses and organizations from the city of Wylie.
