Collin County has been ranked first for health behaviors and factors among Texas counties by Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, a philanthropic organization dedicated to making America’s counties healthier.

Purpose of the rankings is to help counties create personalized roadmaps to better health outcomes.

Collin County leads the state in health behaviors, clinical care and social economic factors, though it ranks 163 out of 237 ranked Texas counties for its physical environment, mostly because of the area’s long work commute.

Studied health behaviors include adult smoking and obesity, food environment, physical inactivity, access to exercise opportunities, excessive drinking, alcohol-impaired deaths, sexually transmitted infections and teen births.

Clinical care data takes into account the percentage of uninsured residents; ratio of primary care physicians, dentists and mental health providers; preventable hospital stays; diabetic monitoring; and mammography screenings.

Social and economic factors taken into consideration include high school graduation rates, percentage of residents who pursue college educations, unemployment, percentage of children in poverty, income inequality, children in single-parent households, social associations, violent crime and injury deaths.

Physical environment factors include air pollution, drinking water violations, severe housing problems, percentage of residents driving alone to work and length of commutes.

Other top ranked Texas counties, in order, are Williamson, Kendall, Fort Bend, Denton, Rockwall, Randall, Gillespie, Travis and Brazos.

According to the data, the Texas counties with the longest length of life are Presidio, Collin, Concho, Williamson, Fort Bend, Denton, Hays, Mills, Travis and Kendall.
