Collin College’s Alpha Mu Tau chapter of the Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) International Honor Society was recognized with 23 individual and chapter awards at the organization’s international convention held April 15-18 in San Antonio. The chapter received awards at the district, regional and international levels.
The Alpha Mu Tau Chapter was named a Top 100 Chapter and a Distinguished Chapter at the international level. PTK also was recognized as “Distinguished” for its Honors in Action project, which sought to apply the skills learned in Phi Theta Kappa to real-world situations. This year’s projects focused on reducing the number of sexual assaults in Texas by raising awareness of potentially hostile environments society unwittingly condones.
Dr. Cary Israel, a former Collin College president, recently received a Michael Bennett Lifetime Achievement Award for his work with Phi Theta Kappa and his support of the organization. Alpha Mu Tau members Collin College students Chaand Lakhani and Sheena Prindle were recognized for being named to the All-Texas Academic Team. Prindle also was named a Gold Coca-Cola Scholar, the highest level attainable.
“Although awards are a great recognition for the hard fought wins this team has had, I believe I am most proud of the active officers and members that saw beyond the bling, awards and accolades and worked simply because they believed in what they were doing,” Dr. Jessica Hargis, PTK advisor and political science professor, said. “Above all else, the 2014-2015 award-winning Alpha Mu Tau chapter of PTK is filled with servant leaders who are in it for the cause, not the reward.”
International level honors and recognitions presented at the convention include Professor Zack Shipley receiving the Paragon Award for New Advisors, Fernanda Munoz receiving Distinguished Chapter Officer and AMT came in fourth in the nation for their Top 10 Relay for Life Team, raising $3,584.
Regional level honors and recognitions included the 5 Star Chapter, Continued Excellence Chapter, Honors in Action Distinction, Dr. Jessica Hargis received the Horizon Award, Dr. Mark McKnight and Professor Zack Shipley received the Advisor Hall of Honor, Fernanda Munoz received Member Hall of Honor, Dr. Cary Israel received Texas Hall of Honor for Distinguished Chief Executive Officers, Deborah Hall received the Friend of Texas award, the second place Icarus award for the chapter’s work on Relay for Life and the Honors in Action and College Project Participation award.
District level honors and recognitions included officer Chaand Lakhani, officer Jennifer Dopson, committee chair and member Sheena Prindle, member Daniel Michel and advisor Dr. Mark McKnight receiving the District II Hall of Honor award.
